General information about ILM Academy

When does an academic year start/end for ILM Academy? Does ILM Academy follow other local school district calendars for student holidays?

Every academic year begins in August (typically towards the middle/end of the month) and ends in May (typically the last week of the month). or the most part, we follow the public school calendar, but with some adjustments for Islamic holidays, such as Eid ul-Adha. Our calendar is developed after reviewing calendars for HISD, Spring Branch and other major school districts. Other holidays, based on public school calendars, include Labor Day, Thanksgiving break, winter break, spring break, and Memorial Day. The school year begins and ends on days close to, but not always exactly on the same days as, the public school calendar.

How long is the school day?

For the 2015-2016 academic year, the school day begins at 8:10am and ends at 3:10pm. Students may arrive as early as 7:55am and leave as late as 3:25pm. These timings may or may not change slightly for the 2016-2017 academic year.

Can I send my child to school for only half a day?

Unless if your child will be attending the ECC, there is no option to send your child to school for only half a day. Students are required to attend the full day for the full classroom routine experience and to avoid missing out on curriculum.

Do you offer before or after school care?

We did not offer after school care in the 2015-2016 academic year. We are taking into consideration parent demand for the next 2016-2017 academic year. If you will be in need of after school care for your child, please note it when you are completing your TADS admissions application when the question is asked. We have not and do not plan to offer before school care.

Do I need to provide my child's lunch and snack daily?

Our PTA (Parent Teacher Association) has contracted lunch deliveries for five days of the week with local restaurants. If you wish to purchase those lunches for your child, you may do so. These lunches are only available for purchase for Montessori and above grade level students, meaning that they are not available for ECC students.

For ECC and Montessori students, snacks are provided for the class, usually by parent volunteers. Elementary and middle school students must bring their own snacks.

General curriculum questions

Do you teach Arabic daily?

Yes, we teach Arabic daily starting from the age of 12 months up through middle school.

Do you teach Islamic Studies and Quran classes?

Yes. These subjects are taught daily in ECC and Montessori and on alternating days in elementary and middle school.

Do you have a hifdh (Quran memorization) program at your school?

We do not have a full hifdh program where students will memorize the entire Quran in the time they are here, however, our students do memorize Quran as a part of our Quran curriculum.

What subjects are taught besides Quran, Islamic Studies, and Arabic?

In elementary and middle school, we also teach English language arts, science, social studies, and math throughout the week. In grades 1-6 we also teach physical education for two periods, art for one period, and computers for one period per week. Middle school grade levels have a greater variety of non-core academic classes.

Do you teach English as a second language (ESL)?

No, we do not have ESL classes. Students applying should understand and be able to speak English. We understand younger students coming into the school such as in our ECC and Montessori will take time to adapt to English as they may be speaking another language at home.

Do the students go to recess?

Yes, students from ECC up through elementary school go to recess on a daily basis. Students in middle school have recess once a week and have outdoor break time daily.

Applying for the 2015-2016 academic year

Are you still accepting applications for the 2015-2016 academic year?

Yes, we are until the end of February. Bear in mind, there are several classes which are filled for this academic year and it is unlikely we will have space for your child to join those classes this year. Therefore, if you are applying for your child to join our ECC-Toddlerclass, Montessori (including pre-school, pre-K, and kindergarten), 1st grade, 2nd grade, or 5th grade, then your child will be added to the waiting list. We do not have waiting lists for this academic year for the ECC-Toddler, 3rd grade, 4th grade, or 6th-8th grades. If you are interested in applying for one of those grade levels, please follow the procedure on our Admissions page.

If I'm applying for the 2015-2016 academic year and my child will be added to a waiting list, how long will my child be on the waiting list?

Time spent on the waiting list depends upon openings in our classes. If a current student withdraws, then we accept children from the waiting list for that same grade level. Preference on who is accepted next from our waiting list is based upon several criteria, which are outlined on our Admissions page. We will not take students into our classes for the 2015-2016 academic year beyond February 2016, even if there is space, due to the time it takes to transition into the new classroom and catch up on the curriculum.

Priority Admissions for the 2016-2017 academic year

When can I apply for my child for the 2016-2017 academic year and what is Priority Admissions?

Priority Admissions for the 2016-2017 academic year are the months of January and February 2016. During this time, you will be able to apply for your child and receive benefits such as preferred admission status and paying a reduced application fee of $65.

What does "preferred admission status" mean?

It means that we give the children applying within the Priority Admissions period first batch preference over those applying after Priority Admissions. We will admit  applicants who applied during Priority Admissions first and then post-Priority Admissions applicants later. Applying during the Priority Admissions period does not guarantee acceptance.

To which grade level do I apply for my child?

If your child will be 12-18 months old by August 2016 and walking, you will apply for the ECC-Infant.
If your child will be 19+ months old by August 2016 and walking, you will apply for ECC-Toddler.
If your child will be turning 3, 4, or 5 by September 30 of this year and is fully potty trained, you will apply for Montessori levels 1, 2, or 3, respectively. These levels are by age and correspond to pre-school, pre-K and kindergarten levels, respectively.
If your child will be turning ages 6-13 by September 30 of this year, you will apply for 1st-8th grades, respectively. If your child is younger/older than the age that we accept for a grade level but has already completed that grade level, you should apply for the next grade level. For example, if your child is turning 6 by September 30 but has already completed 1st grade, you should apply for 2nd grade.

Do you know right now if you will have space for my child in the 2016-2017 academic year?

No, we do not know if we will have space until after Priority Admissions is completed and we see how many of our current students are returning to ILM Academy in the next academic year.

Can I apply after Priority Admissions?

Yes, you may apply for your child any time after Priority Admissions, but you will not receive preferred admission status and will have to pay an increased application fee of $125 per child.

Can I apply before Priority Admissions?

No, we are not accepting applications prior to January 1, 2016 for the 2016-2017 academic year.

Which grade levels will you offer in 2016-2017? Will you offer high school?

Next academic year, as we had this academic year, we will have the Early Childcare Center (for infants and toddlers), Montessori levels 1-3, elementary school (grades 1-5), and middle school (grades 6-8). We do not offer a high school program.

Is my child guaranteed acceptance if I apply for him/her during Priority Admissions?

No, we cannot guarantee acceptance but the likelihood of acceptance if applying during Priority Admissions is increased in comparison to applying after Priority Admissions.

Can I apply now for my child to join the school further in the future, beyond the 2016-2017 academic year?

No, we do not take applications multiple years in advance.

If I already applied for my child for this school year (2015-2016) or a previous school year, do I need to apply again for 2016-2017?

Yes. The application you turned in before was for that specific academic year. We restart the application process and forming of waiting lists each academic year.

How do you determine admission status of applicants?

For details on what we look for in our applicants, please visit the Admissions page of our website.

When do I find out if my child was accepted into ILM Academy for 2016-2017?

You will be informed via a mailed letter in March 2016.

What is your tuition for the 2016-2017 academic year and do I need to pay it now?

For details on our tuition rates and installment payment plans, please visit the Tuition Details page of our website. You will pay tuition only after your child has been accepted into ILM Academy prior to him/her starting school for that academic year.
